“When you’re dealing with an ultra-wideband converter like on an RFSOC, there’s a colossal amount of data you’re trying to deal with,” Sloan says, adding that the first problem in this situation is figuring out how to decimate or channelize the data properly.
To reduce the complexity of throughput to a manageable rate, rather than subchanneling the data stream, FPGA programmable logic enables an efficient way to optimize that communication.
Sloan says his experience designing digital signal processing systems for FPGAs comes in handy when working with the systems that relay messages from Earth to space and vice versa, where a big part of the work involves DSP.
“For me, what’s really fascinating about working with the RFSoC is that there’s so much integrated into one device, both from your data, your analog to digital converter, your programmable logic and your processor. We’re able to build an entire system on a chip to do this, and it’s just so excellent,” Sloan says. “I love it.”
